The water pump by the Denis wine store which housed nesting Great Tits

This picture shows how life goes on, in amongst the desolation of even the grimmest scenes. A family of Great Tits (Parus Major) had made their home in this water pump on the road to St. Junien from Oradour (the D101). This is located just past the Denis wine store where 25 men, including Doctor Jean Desourteaux, were killed on 10th June 1944. The photo was taken on 31st May 2010, by the next day the birds had flown. At the time the photo was taken the fledgling chicks could be heard cheeping in the pump spout.
