Memorial at Souillac

Memorial at Souillac

Memorial to the Resistance at Souillac on the N20. This memorial garden commemorates all the dead of Souillac and does not specifically mention those dates during which Das Reich was moving north from Montauban en route to Normandy i.e. between 8th and 10th June 1944. However there is a record of the local Resistance attacking German troops on 6th June, but this would have been too early for them to have been members of Das Reich. Max Hastings in his book, 'Das Reich, the march of the 2nd SS-Panzer Division through France'; does mention the possibility of another conflict on 8th June when Das Reich would have been in the area. It is entirely possible that the 8th June conflict took place, but it is not specifically recorded on this monument.
